Miss Lights of the Delta Pageants Date: November 29th, 2008
Entry Deadline: Coming Soon!! Mentoring Can Make A Difference in Young People's Lives
We live in a society where moral values have steadily declined, and youth struggle to make the right decisions while battling peer pressure and low self-esteem. Youth are often left without the role models they need to guide them in making life's difficult decisions. Mentors step in and provide the role models necessary to help youth begin their lives on the right track. According to a 1995 study, mentored youth are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, and are 37% less likely to skip class.
I encourage every adult to seek involvement in mentoring programs. The Boys and Girls Club of America and Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America are excellent opportunities to become involved. However, in Arkansas, many communities are rural and do not have these programs. In those circumstances, it is important to consider your individual talents, and seek out the place where you can best use your interests and skills. Mentors can be youth sports coaches, Girl and Boy Scout leaders, tutors in schools, teachers, or volunteers in church programs. By reaching out as a mentor, you can help ensure that America has a brighter future by giving our youth a great foundation.
